The Nifty50 is likely to open on flat to positive note on Friday tracking mixed cues in in the global markets.

Trends on SGX Nifty indicate a marginally higher start for the broader index in India, a gain of 48.5 points or 0.47 percent. Nifty futures were trading around 10,328-level on the Singaporean Exchange.

Wall Street indexes continued their slide in Thursday's volatile session as investors worried about rising interest rates and braced for a trade war hit to corporate earnings a day ahead of the quarterly reporting season kickoff., said a Reuters report.

Asian shares appeared tentative on Friday, holding steady after a nine-day losing streak, but sentiment was frail after Wall Street shares crumbled and expectations of market volatility shot up to an eight-month high, it said.Gold edged down on Friday but held near an over two-month high hit in the previous session, when prices surged over 2 percent as a rout in global stock markets boosted the metal's safe-haven appeal.

Opinion | Why Indian Stock Market Is Staring At A Correction

Over the last few days, the Sensex and Nifty have slipped from their buoyant levels of the past. While there is a view in the market that this fall may only be temporary, there is enough reason to believe that stock markets are very likely due for a significant and persistent correction because of prevailing macroeconomic conditions.

How does one arrive at this conclusion?

Consider the above chart. The red line is real return in excess of the growth rate – which essentially captures the return on capital over and above that generated by economic growth. Simply put, this is the 10-year government security yield (the risk-free rate) adjusted for expected inflation and growth.

The blue line is the dividend yield (dividend/price) of the Nifty at a quarterly frequency. A quick look tells us that the two lines have tracked each other quite well over the last 15 years. However, of late, the dividend-to-price ratio seems to have strayed off a bit – especially since 2016.

This clearly indicates that the current price levels are too high and untenable with the prevailing real interest rates. Further, it is highly likely that with the recent hike in interest rates, this divergence is going to become increasingly shaky and the prices will eventually have to converge to lower levels so as to observe the close correlation of the past.

What makes us so sure that it is the prices and not the dividends which are at fault? To understand this, let’s take a look at the chart below.

The Nifty which started on a bullish note reclaimed its crucial resistance level of 10,700 in the opening tick on Wednesday and build momentum to rally above 10,750 but closed marginally below its resistance level of 10,770.

The index is now trading above most of its crucial short term moving averages. It formed a bullish candle on the daily candlestick charts and is now trading above 5, 13, and 50-EMA

After closing above the 50-EMA, now the real challenge for bulls is to cross the interim top placed around 10,850 levels, experts said, adding the further short covering then may push Nifty towards 11,000 levels.

The Nifty seems to be heading for another retest of the medium term falling trend-line from the all-time high of 11,171.

Equity benchmark indices opened higher on Thursday despite weakness in Asian stock markets. Today’s gains were led by IT stocks, with Nifty IT up around 1.5% in early deals.

All sectoral indices are trading in the green except FMCG, auto and realty stocks.

At 9:40 AM, the BSE Sensex at 34,472 was up by 127 points, while NSE Nifty at 10,452 was higher by 22 points. However, both BSE Midcap and the BSE Smallcap were higher by 0.04% and 0.27%, respectively.

Infosys (+2.4%), HCL Tech (+2.2%), Tech Mahindra (+2%), Tata Steel (+1.4%) and TCS (+1.2%) were the top gainers.

Vedanta (-3.2%), Tata Motors (-3.1%), HPCL (-1.8%), BPCL (-1.6%) and ONGC (-1.4%) were the top losers.

Out of 2,022 stocks traded on the NSE, 1,032 advanced, 507 declined and 483 remained unchanged today.

Tata Motors stock dropped 2.5% after Q4FY18 numbers. Higher raw material and operating expenses put pressure on EBITDA margins, which have contracted yoy in 5 out of the past 8 quarters.

High depreciation, interest and tax expenses dented consolidated PAT leading to a 14% yoy decline in consolidated PAT (not considering exceptional expenses). Reported PAT (including exceptional expenses, minority interest, share in profit of associates, joint ventures and forex gains) declined 50% yoy to Rs2,125cr. This was 42% lower than consensus estimate of Rs3,651cr.

The Indian rupee strengthened against the US dollar in the opening trade amid mixed cues from Asian currencies.

Asian indices opened in the green except the Japanese Nikkei, which traded in the red, as the US Dollar saw gains against the Yen, which hurt exporters.

US stocks recover early fall to close in the green, as Federal Reserve minutes indicates rate hike in June, however, continue to be accommodative going forward. Turkish 'Lira' and Argentina 'Peso" in currency free fall, which hurts sentiment with emerging markets under pressure.
