Good Bargain Motilal Oswal Picks 10 Largecaps Trading Below 52-Week High

The last round of correction, which pushed the index lower by about 9 percent from its August record high, also led to many quality largecap stocks tumble from 52-week highs.

The real challenge for investors now is to look for quality largecaps. Motilal Oswal in a report highlighted 10 stocks which have fallen up to 27 percent from 52-week highs.

The brokerage firm sees an upside of 9-40 percent on these 10 large-cap stocks which include names like RIL, HDFC, Infosys, SBI, ICICI Bank, Maruti Suzuki, L&T, Axis Bank, Titan Company and Hindalco.

India Inc's September earnings were broadly in line with analyst expectations as far as Nifty companies are concerned. As many as 73 companies saw earnings cut of over 3 percent, while 38 companies saw upgrades of over 3 percent.

“While the underlying earnings story is improving (better revenue growth trends, corporate banks’ asset quality turning around, etc.), new risks to earnings are also emerging (autos, NBFC). Consequently, the direction of the earnings revision is still trending down,” Motilal Oswal said in a report.

Analysts feel that if investors are looking to enter markets on declines, largecaps are still a better bet compared to shaky small and midcaps. Earnings for most of the large-cap names are looking up which is a positive sign.

The EPS estimates of most of the stocks in the table above suggest that the earnings are inching higher in FY19 as well as in FY20.

“The headline large-cap indices are still being held up by few major stocks; however, the market breadth remains weak and the broader markets have seen continued selling pressure,” Sahil Kapoor, Chief Market Strategist, Edelweiss Investment Research told Moneycontrol.

“Small and midcaps usually lead the reaction to down cycles, and as the market sentiment turns sour they are the first ones to decline. In our opinion, the broader market is already pretty overvalued relative to the large-cap indices, and the latest market rout is an opportunity for such indices to come back to better valuations,” he said.

The recent correction in the Indian market might have seen many stocks losing their sheen but from a benchmark point of view the valuations are still slightly on the higher side, suggest experts.

“The Indian market valuations are still on the higher side relative to history and bond yields despite the correction over the past few months. The valuations already factor in 15 percent and 26 percent growth in net profits of the Nifty-50 index for FY19 and FY20,” Kotak Institutional Equities said in a note.

“We find decent value in a few sectors and stocks in financials, energy, metals & mining and power utilities but do not find value in the ‘quality’ stocks. Also, it remains to be seen if their high multiples will hold up in the event of tighter global monetary conditions and higher bond yields,” it added.

What a way to start the truncated week. The Nifty50 not just climbed 10,700 levels but also closed above its crucial long-term moving average i.e. 200-DMA placed at 10,752.

Strong global cues, fall in crude oil prices, as well as stable rupee, helped Ithe ndian market climbed crucial resistance levels. The final tally on D-Street – the S&P BSE Sensex climbed 300 points to close at 35,774 while for Nifty50 we saw a rally of 81 points. The index closed at 10,763.

Sectorally, the S&P BSE Realty index rose 1.4 percent, followed by the BSE FMCG which gained 1.2 percent, and the S&P BSE Metal index was up 1.1 percent. On the losing front, PSU, and oil & gas index saw some bit of profit booking.

The big news from the technical front is that the index climbed above 200-DMA. If you remember, the index slipped below this crucial level on October 4, 2018.

A strengthening rupee also boosted sentiment on D-Street, while investors shrugged off weak sentiment coming in from lower crude oil prices.

The index failed to surpass previous day highs (10,651) and consolidated for most part of the trading session, but closing above 10,600 indicated that it could rally further in coming session, experts said.

The Nifty after opening flat gained momentum to surpass 10,600 in morning itself followed by small correction to hit day's low off 10,557.50. The index gradually gained strength again in late morning deals and touched a day's high of 10,646.50 in afternoon. It closed 40.40 points higher at 10,616.70.

"The key take away from Thursday's session can be a closure of Nifty50 above psychologically important resistance level 10,600 for the first time in this entire consolidation phase. Hence, a follow through buying in next session can result in a much awaited breakout above 10,650 levels," Mazhar Mohammad, Chief Strategist

The Nifty started the session on Wednesday with a gap up, opening almost 100 points higher, but erased entire gains throughout the day. The index formed a bearish engulfing pattern on daily charts which suggests that bears are in charge once again.

In the market, auto stocks ended the session as worst performers whereas FMCG stocks outperformed the benchmark index for the day. The volatility index India, VIX, witnessed a rise of 3.51 percent in the previous trading session.

On the options front, 11,000 and 10,700 Calls added most open interest (OI) whereas 10,400 and 10,500 puts ended as most active.

Going forward, the Nifty is likely to consolidate within the range of 10,700 and 10,200 levels. A decisive breakout on either side will confirm the future trend.

A breakdown from the lower band of 10,200 may trigger selling pressure which may take the index towards 9,900.

On the other hand, 10,700 may act as immediate resistance; sustained trades above 10,700 may induce further rally towards 11000.

Here is a list of top three stocks which could give 8-9% return in the next 1 month:

The Nifty breached its 10-SMA and formed a small green candlestick as BankNifty led the overall bullish sentiment on D-Street on Tuesday.

Buying was seen in broader indices as the NiftyBank was leading the sentiment with gains in bluechip banks such as ICICI Bank, SBI and Axis Bank. Reliance Industries and HDFC added further strength to Nifty and helped the index to close above 10,550.

The momentum was strong in indices but the range was much smaller as compared to previous trading sessions. The small green candlestick with a gap-up does indicate strength but also marks a note of cautiousness as a follow up is needed.

The market continued to tumble severely in the second week of October to extend its losing streak for the sixth consecutive week.

Global turmoil and depreciation in rupee (hitting an all-time low of 74.48 against the US dollar) are among the major factors that are taking a toll on sentiment.

Even cooling off in crude oil prices have failed to prop up the mood on Dalal Street. Volatility has spiked significantly as wild swings have caught traders on the wrong foot.

SGX Nifty is currently 40 points up at 10352 levels. For today, another day of range bound trade can be witnessed with 10250 and 10375 being the boundaries, as intraday volatility rules supreme.

On Tuesday, the Nifty had another weak session after rupee hit fresh low later in the day. The bears are celebrating all prolonged weakness in the currency with added ripple effect on stocks and bonds adding to the weak sentiment.

Global markets: Asian indices opened marginally in the green as the Japanese Nikkei held on to slender gains. The undertone remains fragile with Chinese stocks, bonds, and currency trading down, which is dragging the whole of Asia along as pessimism from after effect of trade tariffs hurt sentiment.

US markets: US stocks ended lower even as technology stocks bounced back after three days of losses. Bond yields edged lower along with the US dollar, while crude edges higher as threat of hurricane see supply disruption. Equities see consolidation as global rout on stocks keeps the sentiment weak.

FII Data: In the yesterday’s trading session, FIIs sold 1242cr stock in the cash market, whereas DIIs bought 1526cr worth of stock. In the derivative market, FIIs bought 80cr of Index futures and sold 1447cr worth of Index options. In the Stock futures segment, FIIs bought 376cr worth of stock futures and sold 15cr stock options.

FII View: In the yesterday’s trading session, FII created marginally bullish positions in the derivatives market, which is deduced by the fact that they reduced 7689 short contracts in Index Futures, while simultaneously creating 7496 long contracts in Index Call options and 8961 short contracts in Index Put options. However, the long-short ratio in Index Futures continues to remain at 0.7 since the start of the series which is a bearish sign.

Fresh record highs for both Sensex and Nifty. The index closed above its crucial resistance level of 11550 on Monday and if the momentum continues in Tuesday’s session there is a higher probability that the index might inch towards 11600.

This is the 23rd time the Nifty has closed at a new high this calendar year. 13 of the 23 highs came in January and the rest 10 after that.

Positive global cues, recovery in rupee, fall in crude oil prices and in-line Q1 results season provided much-needed comfort to the bulls to continue their buying spree.

The rupee also strengthened about 40 paise and the yield on the 10-year Treasuries fell by 3 basis points.

What a week it has been for equity markets – higher MSP for farmers, trade tensions between the US and China, rising crude oil prices and rupee depreciation. But, Indian markets managed to climb all wall of worries and closed 0.54 percent higher for the week ended July 6.

It closed below 10800 levels but above 10,770 which is a good sign. Also, it is trading above all its crucial short-term moving averages

However, the big consensus among the analyst community is that the downside looks fairly limited but investors should wait for a breakout or a breakdown on either side before initiating fresh positions

It has to continue to hold above 10777 zones to extend its move towards 10835 then 10888.

Sensex, Nifty End Higher For 3rd Day; Post 3% Weekly Gain

Posted by suhani varma on Saturday, July 18, 2015 with No comments

After a consolidation, equity benchmarks managed to close higher for the third consecutive session on Friday, aided by technology, healthcare, metals and select auto stocks. Meanwhile, the week was very strong for the market, led by relief rally. The 30-share BSE Sensex gained 17.19 points at 28463.31 and the Nifty rose 1.80 points to 8609.85. The broader markets marginally outperformed benchmarks as the BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices advanced 0.2-0.4 percent. Experts believe the market has been in a broad consolidation range and that may continue in July at least.

For the week, the Sensex and Nifty rallied 3 percent each while the CNX Midcap Index climbed 3.5 percent after European Union cleared Greece's bailout package and clearance to composite FDI cap from cabinet. BSE FMCG Index gained the most among sectoral indices, up 8.8 percent followed by Bank Nifty, BSE Pharma, Oil & Gas, Auto and IT with 2-5 percent upside. Banking & financials stocks saw selling pressure today as investors awaited more clarity on composite FDI cap cleared by the cabinet on Thursday. For FII investment in banks, government's nod could be needed for any stake above 49 percent.
