SGX Nifty is at 10,961.85, up 54.90 points. For today, expect more color from earnings & stability on the rupee to see the broader market witness some upside.

Nifty saw heavyweights Reliance & Kotak Bank pull the index to the highest close in 3 months even as the broader market struggled. The re-rating of Reliance saw Nifty come within whispering distance of 11000 as fresh buying saw new near term highs on the stock.

Global Markets: Asian indices opened flat to mildly in the red as caution was the buzzword after a stellar start to the New Year. Asian equities may see China see more gains as analysts are seeing more Government steps to cut the CRR & spend more on infrastructure to instill higher growth. Data available from South Korea & Taiwan indicated slower exports, which may see US$ strengthen against their currencies.

US Markets: US indices to re-open today after a holiday as best start to the New Year sees caution in early Asian trade. Oil, bond yields & equities rise in tandem as risk on trade returns in 2019. US/China trade talks at the end of January hold key for market direction going forward.

FII/DII Data: In yesterday’s trading session, FIIs sold 299 crores stock in the cash market whereas DIIs bought 520 crores worth of stock. In the derivative market, FIIs bought 485 crores of Index futures and bought 645 crores worth of Index options. In the Stock futures segment, FIIs bought 388 crores worth of stock futures and sold 162 crores stock options.

SGX Nifty is at 10,580, down 157 points. For today, we expect volatility to rise as we see markets open gap down with short covering & institutional buying holding the fort.

Nifty saw a sharp short covering rally late on Friday ahead of the exit polls with the Nifty gaining nearly 100 points to close @ 10700. The outlook today will be very weak as we have the double whammy of exit polls in favor of Congress & extremely weak global cues coupled with oil prices also seeing a rebound. Expect volatility to rise as we see markets open gap down with short covering & institutional buying holding the fort.

Global markets: Asian indices traded in a sea of red as China opposed the arrest of Huawei CEO with markets expecting further escalation of tensions. The sell-off on wall street is also adding to the woes of most Asian markets as sentiment turns weak. Expect Chinese markets to dictate the trend as Government institutions buy stocks to prevent any further collateral damage.

US markets: US stocks witness worst week since March as weaker than expected job numbers coupled with growing China tensions sees stocks sell-off on Friday. Oil prices stage come back as OPEC agrees to output cut which meets market expectations.

FII/DII Data: In Friday’s trading session FIIs sold 817cr stock in the cash market whereas DIIs bought 242cr worth of stock. In the derivative market, FIIs bought 616cr of Index futures and sold 227cr worth of Index options. In the Stock futures segment, FIIs bought 854cr worth of stock futures and bought 6cr stock options.

FII View: FIIs created bullish positions in the derivative segment in Friday’s trading session which is deduced by the fact that they created 7557 net long contracts in Index Futures while simultaneously creating 15187 short contracts in Index Put Options. However, the PCR ratio since the start Dec series currently stands at 0.8x which is a bearish sign.

It was nothing short of carnage on D-Street. The S&P BSE Sensex breached its crucial support level of 38000 on the downside while the Nifty50 ended below 11,450 levels. Nifty plunged 1.3 percent, its highest single-day fall in nearly six months.

It looks like Nifty has resumed the short-term downtrend and can extend the fall toward next supports at 11,200, suggest experts.

It would be advisable to remain cautious on markets this week. Resistance for Nifty is seen at 11,620.

The rupee which plunged to a record low of Rs 72.67/$ managed to recoup some losses and closed at a fresh record low of 72.45/$.
