SGX Nifty is at 10938, up 16 points. For today, we expect more action as global cues see more participation after a holiday period.

On Tuesday, the Nifty saw a weak start in early trade as most stocks traded lower and the Nifty tested 10807 on the downside. However, strong second half buying by local mutual funds saw the Nifty staged the sharp comeback to end the session above 10900-mark. Both, PSU & private banks along with financial services led the rally, while reality stocks also chipped in with gains.

Global markets: Asian indices to reopen today after the New Year break, while Japanese Nikkei to re-open tomorrow. The markets will open on a quiet note given the poor performance of 2018, where Asian equities hugely underperformed. Fall in oil and bond yields should see some equity outperformance in January with earnings being the key catalyst.

US markets: Global markets set to reopen after New Year break as President Donald Trump signaled an early end to the government shutdown, which sees US futures rise. US bond yields hit 2.68%, the lowest in a year, while oil sees a marginal uptick. The New Year is set to usher in a quiet start to equities globally as markets prepare for a rebound.

FII/DII Data: In yesterday’s trading session, FIIs sold 48cr stock, whereas DIIs bought 142cr worth of stock. In the derivative market, FIIs sold 475cr of Index futures and bought 403cr worth of Index options. In the Stock futures segment, FIIs sold 83cr worth of stock futures and bought 72cr stock options.

FII View: FIIs created bearish positions in the derivative segment in yesterday’s trading session, which is deduced by the fact that they created 2553 short contracts in Index Futures, while simultaneously reducing 4568 long contracts. They also created 2303 long contracts in Index Put Options.
