Equity benchmark indices opened flat as gains in Tata Steel, ICICI Bank and ONGC were offset by losses in BPCL, ITC and HPCL.Share indices saw a subdued start to the session as they fluctuated between marginal gains and losses, with an upward movement in metal, pharmaceutical and realty stocks offsetting the subdued global cues.
, the BSE Sensex was trading at 32,608, up mere 8 points, while the Nifty50 index was trading at 9,990, down 8 points.
The BSE Midcap and the BSE Smallcap indices marginally up 0.09% and 0.08%, respectively.
Shares of metal companies recovered from last week's sell-off with the Nifty Metal index rising over 0.5%, led by chart-topping gains in shares of Tata Steel.
The Nifty Pharma index rose 0.5% led by gains in shares of Cadila Healthcare after the company said it has received the US Food and Drug Administration's approval for metoprolol succinate tablets.
The Nifty IT index slipped 0.4% as investors booked profits on the recent gains.
Indiabulls Real Estate gained 2% after it executed a definitive agreement with global private equity investor Blackstone Group to divest 50% stake in its prime commercial properties in Mumbai for Rs4,750cr.
Granules India stock rose 0.5% said the US Food and Drug Administration has issued no 483 observations for Gagillapur unit and one 483 observations for Jeedimetla unit.
Shares of MMTC surged 6.5% after Commerce & Industry Minister Suresh Prabhu said a merger of MMTC and STC is on the cards and the matter is under process, as per media reports.
Volatility index India VIX added 2.75% to 15.9725.
Bajaj Fin (+1.5%), IndusInd Bank (+1%), SBI (+0.98%), ICICI Bank (+0.91%) and Yes Bank (+0.89%) were the top gainers on Nifty50.
GAIL (-2.8%), HPCL (-2.2%), BPCL (-1.6%), IOC (-1.6%) and TCS (-1.2%) were the top losers in today’s trade.
Out of 2,011 stocks traded on the NSE, 811 advanced, 751 declined and 449 remained unchanged today.
A total of two stocks registered a fresh 52-week high in trade today, while 119 stocks touched a new 52-week low on the NSE.
