Earlier at the opening bell, benchmark indices open in the red. Sensex opened over 200 points lower on the first day of the week.
The downtrend was led by index heavyweight Infosys, which tumbled 5% after its FY19 growth outlook disappointed the street.
Other heavyweights including Wipro, Tech Mahindra, Tata Motors and Reliance Industries stocks which continued to trade lower, putting pressure on the market.
UCO Bank plunged 18% intraday to lowest since August 2006 as ex-Chairman, others charged with fraud.
The BSE Sensex was down 229.59 points at 33,963.06 and the NSE Nifty fell 66.20 points to 10,414.40.
The market breadth was firmly titled in favor of the sellers.
Volatility index India VIX was up 3.04 at 14.5700.
M&M (+0.44%), Cipla (+0.39%), ITC (+0.33%), Hero Motocorp (+0.28%), Grasim (+0.28%) were the top gainers on the NSE.
Infosys (-4.73%), Wipro (-1.75%), TechM (-1.6%), Tata Motors (-1.41%), HCL Tech (-1.20%) were the top losers on the NSE.
Out of 2,038 stocks traded on the NSE, 668 advanced, 931 declined and 439 remained unchanged today.
A total of 22 stocks registered a fresh 52-week high in trade today, while 24 stocks touched a new 52-week low on the NSE.
