The Indian equity market ended with smart gains on Tuesday extending its winning streak to the third consecutive trading session. Indices surged higher after Skymet on Monday predicted an “above normal” Southwest monsoon this year. After market hours, MET department also predicted monsoon to be above normal. Indian monsoon rainfall may be 106% of long period average this year. The sentiment was optimistic ahead of IIP and inflation data scheduled to be released later today.
Agriculture-related stocks such as VST Tillers Tractors, Jain Irrigation, Insecticides (India) rose after weather forecasters said 2016 monsoon rains are seen above average. Oil & gas, auto, healthcare and industrials index were the top performers even the mid-cap and small-cap stocks ended with gains. On the other hand, metals index ended in the red.
GAIL, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors DVR, Tata Motors, ZEEL, Hero MotoCorp, Aurobindo Pharma and Dr Reddy's were among the gainers on NSE, whereas Coal India, Tata Steel, Idea Cellular, ITC, Tech Mahindra, HDFC Bank, SBI and HCL Tech were among the losers today.
Finally, the NSE Nifty closed with a gain of 38 points at 7,708. The NSE Nifty opened at 7,669 hitting a high of 7,717 and low of 7,663.
The India VIX (Volatility) index was marginally up 0.07% to 16.0250. On the global front, China's Shanghai Composite index closed down 0.31% and Hang Seng was up 0.31%. In Europe, the FTSE 100 was trading higher. On the other hand, DAX and the CAC 40 up by 0.5% each.
The Indian Rupee was trading down by 4 paise at 66.46 per US dollar. Out of 1,801 stocks traded on the NSE, 621 declined and 926 advanced today.
