After opening 1% higher on Wednesday, equity benchmarks, Sensex and Nifty, have pared gains, with the BSE trading 232 points up at 34,083 levels. The NSE was up 62 points at 10,209 levels, well below its key level of 10,250.
The selloff in IT and Pharma stocks was offset by strong buying in Realty, PSU Bank, Financial Services, and Metal stocks.
Among shares, HDFC, Reliance, ICICI Bank, Bajaj Finance, L&T, ITC, and IndusInd Bank were major contributors to the gain in Sensex. On the flip side, Lupin, Bharti Infratel, Zee Entertainment Enterprises, Wipro, and Grasim were the biggest losers. Shares of Wipro were trading ~2% down on the BSE ahead of Q2FY19 numbers.
Further, sectoral indices on the NSE were in the green except Nifty IT, Pharma, and Media indices. Nifty Realty and PSU Bank were leading the sectoral indices’ gain rising 2%, each. Nifty Bank and Financial Services also joined the gainers group rising ~1%.
Meanwhile, market breadth was positive on the NSE with 1,124 shares advancing, 457 shares declining, and 468 shares remaining unchanged.
Besides, the rupee opened 30 paise higher at 73.18 per dollar against its previous close of 73.56. Currently, the home currency is trading at 73.24 against the American currency.
