Benchmark equity closed lower for the second consecutive session Wednesday, tracking global weakness and after the Reserve Bank of India decided to maintain repo rate at 6%.
Indian equity benchmarks fell to their lowest level in over a month led by losses in banking stocks after the Reserve Bank of India kept key rates unchanged and maintained its neutral policy stance.
RBI left the repo rate unchanged at 6% but increased the Consumer Price Index inflation target. The RBI, at its fifth Bi-Monthly Monetary Policy meet, increased the Consumer Price Index inflation target for Oct-Mar to 4.3%-4.7% from 4.2%-4.6% earlier.
The BSE Sensex fell 0.63% or 205 points to 32,597 and the NSE Nifty50 Index dropped 0.73% or 74 points to 10,044 level. The BSE MidCap Index fell 0.9% and BSE SmallCap Index declined 0.66%.
All sectoral indices on the NSE, barring the Nifty IT Index, closed in the red.
RIL (+1.6%), Tech Mahindra (+1.4%), Maruti (+1.3%), HUL (+1.1%) and Ambuja (+0.9%) were the top gainers on Nifty50.
Bosch (-3.8%), Hindalco (-3.2%), Infratel (-3.01%), Eicher (-2.7%) and Vedanta (-2.4%) were the top losers in today’s trade.
India VIX gained 0.53%.
Out of 1,517 stocks on the NSE, 441 advanced, 1,029 declined and 47 remained unchanged today.
A total of 56 stocks registered a 52-week high, while 19 stocks touched new 52-week low on the NSE.
