Benchmark indices closed lower on Tuesday, with the Sensex ending over 200 points down, while the Nifty was below 10,250-mark.Indian equity benchmarks snapped three day winning streak and ended near day’s low led by HDFC Bank, ITC, ICICI Bank and L&T.
the Sensex closed lower by 227 points or 0.68% at 33,228, while the Nifty50 slipped 82 points or 0.80% to 10,240.
Dr. Reddy's gained as the US Food and Drug Administration cleared its Bachupally formulation unit, while ONGC rose tracking crude oil prices, which were at a two-year high.
Oil marketing companies - Bharat Petroleum Corp, Indian Oil Corp and Hindustan Petroleum Corp - fell 2-4% and were the worst hit on the Nifty50 as higher crude oil prices will hit their profitability.
ONGC (+2.9%), Dr.Reddy’s (+2.8%), Adani Ports (+2.3%), GAIL (+2.2%) and Lupin (+1%) were the top gainers on the Nifty50.
HPCL (-4%), Infratel (-3.4%), BPCL (-2.9%), Coal India (-2.5%) and Eicher (-2.2%) were the top losers.
India VIX jumped 7.8%.
Out of 1,543 stocks traded on the NSE, 464 advanced, 1,041 declined and 38 remained unchanged today.
A total of 85 stocks registered a 52-week high, while 15 stocks touched a new 52-week low on the NSE.
