Sensex, Nifty Remain Strong; Banking, Pharma Stocks Gain

The S&P BSE Sensex is trading at 27,480 up 192 points, while NSE Nifty is trading at 8,296 up 45 points. The BSE Mid-cap Index is trading down 0.01% at 11,166, whereas BSE Small-cap Index is trading up 0.12% at 11,576.

Indian Rupee today opened at 65.77/$ higher by 32 paise in early trade on Friday on fresh selling of the US currency by exporters and banks. On the global front, Global cues are healthy with the Dow gaining 1.87%, S&P 500 adding 1.66% and Nasdaq rising by 1.65%. Wall Street was boosted by better than expected corporate earnings by a couple of firms and among them was McDonald's. Asian markets are also well in the green.

ITC, NTPC, GAIL, ONGC, Coal India and Axis Bank are among the gainers, whereas Bharti Airtel, Wipro, Maruti Suzuki, Vedanta, L&T, Hero MotoCorp and Hindalco are losing sheen on BSE. The INDIA VIX is down 1.78% at 16.32. It hit a high of 16.62 and a low of 14.65. Out of 1,749 stocks traded on the NSE, 658 declined and 801 advanced today. A total of 47 stocks registered a fresh 52-week high in trades today, while 9 stocks touched a new 52-week low on the NSE.

Akzo Nobel India has gained 1.6% at Rs.1,409 on BSE. The company reported a 14.62% increase in its net profit at Rs. 40.98 crore for the second quarter ended September 30, riding on increase in demand.
