Nifty, Sensex End Higher For Fourth Straight Day

Major benchmark indices, Nifty and Sensex closed higher for the fourth consecutive trading session on Wednesday. Nifty ended at 9,914.9 level, up by 55 points, while Sensex closed at 31,671 level, up by 174 points. There were 998 advances, 631 declines and 335 unchanged stocks on NSE. India VIX ended lower by 6.3% at 11.67 level.The Reserve Bank of India's Monetary Policy Committee has maintained status quo in its fourth bi-monthly monetary policy meeting leaving the benchmark repo rate unchanged at 6%.

In the broader markets, BSE Mid-cap index closed at 15,614 level, up by 59 points, while BSE Small-cap index closed at 16,320 level, up by 127 points. Bank Nifty ended at 24,113 level, up by 9 points or 0.04%. The index slipped by more than 100 points from its day’s high to end almost flat with a positive bias.

Selling activity was seen in sectors including IT, Telecom, Metal and Consumer Durables, while all the other sectoral indices on BSE closed in the positive territory. Nifty Pharma index was the top gaining index ending at 9,372.3 level, up by 1.71%. Nifty Metal index ended lower by 0.15% at 3,588.1 level.Kotak Bank was the top gainer in the Bank Nifty index gaining Rs 22.3 per share or 2.22% at Rs 1,028.85 per share. Yes Bank and State Bank of India were also among the top gainers on the index ending higher by more than 0.8%.
