The BSE Sensex opened 128.39 points, or 0.48 per cent, up at 26,653.85, while Nifty 50 index opened 35.90 points up at 8,176.65. The S&P BSE Sensex is trading at 26,650 up 124 points, while NSE Nifty is trading at 8,165up 24 points.

The BSE Mid-cap Index is trading up 0.17% at 11,384, whereas BSE Small-cap Index is trading up 0.49% at 11,457. Coal India, Axis Bank, Maruti Suzuki, HDFC, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and TCS are among the gainers, whereas Tata Steel, Sun Pharmaceutical, HUL, Infosys, L&T and Dr.Reddy's are losing sheen on BSE.

Some buying activity is seen in realty, auto, industrial, finance, banking, metal and FMCG sectors, while telecom, pharma, capital goods and utilities sector are showing weakness on BSE. The INDIA VIX is down 0.22% at 17.6575. Out of 1,816 stocks traded on the NSE, 632 declined, 881 advanced and 303 remained unchanged today.

A total of 38 stocks registered a fresh 52-week high in trades today, while 17 stocks touched a new 52-week low on the NSE. Max Financial Services rallied 16.4% to Rs.499 on BSE. HDFC Life and Max Life are in talks to create the country's biggest private life insurer, according to reports. Both the companies may announce plans in the next few days. 

If talks fructify, the merger will be the first among life insurers in more than a decade, the report added. HDFC gained 1.5% to Rs.1219 on BSE. Shares of Ajanta Pharma are currently trading 0.69% down at Rs. 1,493 on BSE despite the reports that the company will be investing Rs.100 crore in Work Express.
